About Human Story Experiment

A network of careful humans interviewing other humans. Slow regional journalism across Kitsap County. The practice arm of Age of Robots.

Human Story Experiment is a network of careful humans interviewing other humans.

We are slow on purpose. The pieces we publish take longer to make than to read. The interviews go two hours and produce one essay. The photographs take a morning of being in someone's kitchen. The work moves at the speed of attention, not the speed of the algorithm.

We are regional, mostly. Most of our work covers gardens, businesses, creative practices, and food in and around Kitsap County, Washington. We believe local stories are often better than global ones, because the texture is real and the subjects are people you might run into at the farmers market.

The network

HSE publishes across a small network of titles, each with its own editor and its own rhythm:

  • Kitsap Garden. Gardeners, growers, soil, and the people who tend it.
  • Kitsap Biz. Local businesses and the humans running them.
  • Kitsap Creative. Artists, craftspeople, makers, and creative practice.
  • Eats Pass. The food economy, from kitchen to table.

Each publication has its own editorial team, its own calendar, its own rhythm. The teams are autonomous. HSE itself does not assign stories, does not police drift, does not manage editors. The network shares an editorial standard and a quiet philosophy. The work happens in the publications, made by humans passionate about the specific subject.

How each team works

The shape of each team is the same everywhere in the network:

  • An Editor holds the standard, reviews the work before publishing, and makes the call on what makes the page.
  • Scouts notice subjects worth writing about, the people the algorithm keeps missing.
  • Interviewers sit with subjects for two hours and come back with something true.
  • Photographers capture portraits that feel like the actual person, not the press release version.
  • Video producers film what photography cannot, with the same patience.

Stories arrive in three rough shapes, chosen to fit the subject: long-form features with photography woven throughout, lightly edited Q&A interviews where the subject's voice carries, and image-led photo essays where the captions do most of the work.

How we use AI

We use AI to help build the platform, draft scaffolding copy, and edit on the margins. We do not use it to write the stories or invent the humans in them. Every story published here is the work of real humans who sat with real subjects, and every byline is a real human who is editorially responsible for the piece. More on where the line is.

Where this fits

Human Story Experiment is the practice arm of Age of Robots. If AoR is the argument for paying close attention as the machines arrive, HSE is the work of doing it, regionally, slowly, with real subjects and real photographs.

The bet behind the whole project is simple. As the machines arrive and most of what gets called "content" becomes cheaper and lower-quality than what came before it, we want to make a small bet on the other direction. Real attention, given to one human at a time, told by another human who sat there long enough to get it right.

If you want to help make it

HSE does not recruit at the network level. Each publication recruits its own team. Find the publication whose subject matter calls to you and claim a role there:

  • Eats Pass. Food, kitchens, growers, cooks. Editor seat open.
  • Kitsap Biz. Independent businesses, operators, craftspeople. Editor seat open.
  • Kitsap Garden and Kitsap Creative. Teams forming as the editors come together.

If you have a publication in mind that fits the HSE shape — slow, regional, real subjects, real photographs — reach out and we can talk about starting a new pod.

If you want to read along

Subscribe below. It is free. New stories arrive in your inbox when they appear. There will likely be a paid tier eventually for the behind-the-scenes pieces and the archive, but we have not figured all of that out yet. That is part of what makes this an experiment.
